Interview Summary
A retired United Methodist minister, Reverend Greene graduated from Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia in 1929. His first pastorship was at a church on Newtown Pike in Lexington in 1931, and in 1939 he was appointed minister at Gunn Tabernacle Church where he remained until appointed district superintendent for the Methodist Episcopal church in 1948. The first African American member of the Community Chest Board, he served as leader of the "Colored Division" for two years. Reverend Greene recalls his appointment to the Board of Education (1966-68) and the controversy surrounding the integration of Dunbar High School. He talks about how the black churches could participate in community activities and improve the lives of the locals in the area.Interview Accession
