Interview Summary

Rip Sewell was born in Alabama and started his baseball career in Tennessee. He was a pitcher in Major League Baseball and is credited for inventing the Eephus pitch (also spelled Ephus), a very low speed junk pitch. In this interview, he discusses his pitching style, some of his fellow players for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Robert Murphy's attempts in the 1940's to unionize baseball, the Mexican League and the penalization of players who defected to it, gambling in baseball and the creation of a pension plan for baseball players.
