Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Tina Martin served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in an education program in Tonga from 1970-71. She discusses joining the Peace Corps to gain cross-cultural experiences, training in Hawaii and her experiences living in the village of Ha’ateiho and teaching English– often through song– in ‘Atele Primary School. She talks about returning to Tonga in 2008 and her concerns about Tongan’s changed habits resulting in environmental degradation. In addition, she talks about her participation among 400 RPCV’s reading from their Peace Corps journals during an event in the Capitol Rotunda in 1988 to commemorate the legacy of President John F. Kennedy on the 25th anniversary of his assassination and her memoir Everything I Should Have Learned, I Could have Learned in Tonga.
