Interview with Charles E. Barnhart, November 6, 1996

Project: Charles Elmer Barnhart, Jr. Oral History Project

Interview Summary

In this interview, Dr. Charles E. Barnhart talks about being appointed as Acting Dean in College of Agriculture at the University of Kentucky, after Dean William A. Seay's plane crash in early February, 1969. He discusses how the search committee for a new Dean at U.K. was formed. Barnhart says he was appointed Dean in May, 1969. He refers to the quiet support offered from the Kentucky Farm Bureau. He describes his communications with then Acting President Albert Dennis Kirwan and Dr. A. D. Albright regarding the transition during this time, emphasizing that he did not discuss his future with either. He notes that the transition process was "smooth", since much of the administrative staff was already in place. Barnhart recalls his interview for the position of Chairman of Animal Science at Iowa State University several years prior to the transition

Barnhart discusses the organization of the County Extension Service, recalling the "controversy of the Extension Organization" becoming more noticeable and active (state-wide) during this time and his decision not to make any changes during his interim deanship. He recalls his interaction with various farm groups and the political implications during this controversy. He mentions some of the decisions that were made before he would accept the position of Dean in regards to a house, salary, and retirement plan. Barnhart talks about reassigning Dr. John Snyder from Dean of Extension Services to Dean of Horticulture.
