Interview with Laura Bechard, September 8, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Laura Bechard served in Paraguay, 2014-2016, in Environment. She had wanted to join Peace Corps since her teenage years. Accordingly, Laura entered the Masters International Program at Cornell, a former Peace Corps program that equipped volunteers with the education and skills to serve, and helped students earn an advanced degree. Laura went from the capitol Asunción to Guarambaré for training, and began learning the Guarani language. Her permanent site was Primera Línea Irrazabal. There she worked and lived with her community contact, a teacher. Laura created many projects, including building bio-digesters and holding environmental camps for students. Laura traveled in Paraguay and the region before returning home. Back in the U.S., Laura accepted a job with a fair trade, worker-owned cooperative that purchases sugar for its products from… Paraguay! Laura warns that re-entry can be lengthy, but encourages people to join Peace Corps; the experience gave her confidence and “tranquilo”.
