Interview Summary

David Goodpaster (Malawi, 2005-2007; Health) discusses working as a health educator with his wife, Lauren, in Malawi. To begin the interview, Goodpaster discusses his upbringing and educational background. The interviewee explains why he decided to join the Peace Corps. Subsequently, Goodpaster outlines the Peace Corps application, orientation and training process. Goodpaster reveals his first impressions of Malawi. Goodpaster talks about the uniqueness of himself and his wife becoming volunteers because of their age, being a couple, and living in a village outside of Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. Goodpaster describes his work with a counterpart and friend working with life skills and health education training for teachers. Goodpaster's travels throughout Africa during his stint in the Peace Corps are also mentioned. Goodpaster explains how his time spent in the Peace Corps changed his outlook and future career, as well as how his service impacted Malawi in general. Lastly, Goodpaster discusses the meaning of Peace Corps as an organization.
