Interview Summary
Burton “Burt” Bogardus served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana, from 1966 to 1968, in the Education Program. Bogardus attended the Universities of California at Santa Barbara and Berkeley. At U.C. Berkeley, he met Peace Corps recruiters and decided to volunteer. He was selected for Ghana 7, and trained at Barnard College in New York City. Training included Twi language, culture, practice teaching, and a total culture immersion home stay with a Puerto Rican family in Harlem. Bogardus’ assignment was in Mpraeso, a small town north of Accra, at Mpraeso Secondary School. He lived on campus in quarters shared with another volunteer. Bogardus taught biology, physics, and math. The interview discusses his training, living conditions, students, working with local and expatriate teachers, travel in Ghana, travels after completion of service, and views on the value of Peace Corps Service.Interview Accession
