Interview with Brittany Bates, August 15, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: COVID-19 Evacuated Peace Corps Volunteers Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Brittany Bates served in the Dominican Republic, 2018-2020, in Education, until her term was cut short by the Peace Corps’COVID-19 evacuation order in March 2020. The evacuation was swift and forced painful goodbyes. Initially Brittany believed volunteers would soon be returning to host countries, but it quickly became apparent that was not to be. Brittany had wanted to join Peace Corp since she was a high school junior. The opportunity for service, volunteering, travel and cross-cultural experience called to her. During challenging times in her service this long-held dream kept her going. Staging was in Miami; pre-service training was in and around Santo Domingo, the capital. Brittany’s permanent site was in a small interior village of some 300, Hato Nuevo, where she taught (in Spanish) elementary school students how to read and write Spanish. Brittany says it is the lasting relationships built with Dominicans which made her service so rewarding.Interview Accession
