Interview with Ron Ranson, June 15, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Ron Ranson was a Volunteer in Nepal: 1964 - 1966. Ron majored in theater at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California and taught English in Narayan Ghat in the Chitwan region of Nepal. A professor who was critical of Peace Corps motivated him to research it further and to apply. An extensive test on a made-up language was part of the application form. Training was at the UO in Eugene and included language, cooking, physical training and psychological assessments. Upon arrival in Nepal, it took 2 months to find a place to live in a brick building – two rooms with a family. A significant achievement was helping found a community college and developing protocols to allow females to attend high school. After Peace Corps Ron finished his MFA, he went on to teach theatre at Rio Hondo College and UC San Diego. He made several films about Nepal
