Interview with Carl Mulhausen, June 22, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Carl Muhlhausen served twice in Uganda, once from 1971-1972 as a chemistry and physics teacher in the town of Kisoro, and again 42 years later in the town of Kabale, about 20 miles from Kisoro, as a science lecturer in teacher’s college. Amazingly, the vice-principal of the teacher’s college remembered having a teacher named Muhlhausen, and he helped Carl reunite with some of his former pupils, several of whom had attained high positions in the government. His initial service was not long after independence, and there were still many vestiges of colonialism which no longer existed in his second. He hiked mountains and a volcano while there and loved living in the tropics. Returning in 2013 at age 62, he enjoyed his relationship with the other volunteers and getting more involved in his community. Since he was evacuated during his first service because of the increasing violence caused by Idi Amin, he was glad to be able to complete a full term of service the second time, and feels Peace Corps service was one of the best decisions of his life.Interview Accession
