Interview Summary
In this interview with James W. Martin, former director of the Bureau of Business Research at the University of Kentucky, Martin discusses several issues relating to the field of economics. He talks about the effects of the Great Depression on both the state of Kentucky and the nation as a whole. He offers criticism of various politicians' economic policies during the Depression and discusses the types of policies he would have instated. Martin also discusses the recession occurring at the time of the interview and talks about how it differed from the Great Depression.Martin talks about his role as director of the Bureau of Business Research. He talks about his research and proposal of a gasoline tax in Kentucky, state-operated liquor stores, motor vehicle taxation, and a state income tax bill, as well as his work with the Kentucky Employment Committee.
