Interview with Maren Haas, April 3, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Maren Haas served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Burkina Faso from 2011-2013 as a formal education volunteer. She grew up in a family that emphasized community service and had a couple extended overseas experiences before joining the Peace Corps immediately after college. Living with a family in the training village of Sapone challenged her linguistically since she knew little French and none of the family’s native language. She was assigned the village of Lalgaye and taught math to classes of 70+ middle school students. Her secondary projects included helping create the first national science camp, a girl’s empowerment camp, and establishing a library in her school. She is proud of being a model for the young girls in the village instilling in them confidence and the importance of education. Upon returning home she changed her career path and worked in international education for over seven years.Interview Accession

You may come across language in UK Libraries Special Collections Research Center collections and online resources that you find harmful or offensive. SCRC collects materials from different cultures and time periods to preserve and make available the historical record. These materials document the time period when they were created and the view of their creator. As a result, some may demonstrate racist and offensive views that do not reflect the values of UK Libraries.
If you find description with problematic language that you think SCRC should review, please contact us at SCRC@uky.edu.
