Interview Summary

Dr. Porter Mayo (Professor Emeritus, College of Medicine, University of Kentucky) had a surgery practice in Lexington, Kentucky from 1954-1984 and served as Clinical Professor of Surgery and the Director of the Problem-Based-Learning Program at the Department of Surgery at the University of Kentucky. In this interview, May discusses his medical education at the University of Louisville, his further medical study in Texas and Michigan, and his decision to practice in Lexington, Kentucky. Mayo also discusses his acquaintances with other physicians around the state and the Department of Surgery that developed at the University of Kentucky. In addition, Mayo discusses the inherent challenges in medical education and touches on the most important points in a historical inquiry of the Medical Center.
