Interview Summary

Hershel Shrewsbury became the executive director of the Wyoming County Community Action Program in West Virginia in the 1960s. In this interview Shrewsbury discusses how he became involved in community action and how he was elected as a county chairman, chairman of the county board, and finally executive director of the organization. He talks about the issues the group wanted to resolve and the opposition they encountered. He talks about the role of outside volunteers from the VISTA and Appalachian Volunteers programs in community organizing.
