Interview Summary

Larry Berkowitz became a Peace Corps Volunteer in 1970, at age 10, when his parents joined Peace Corps and traveled to Fiji. They were the first Peace Corps family in Fiji. Larry and his sister participated in training in Suva, where they learned Fijian language. Larry’s father was posted to the University of the South Pacific and his mother at hospitals and a school for children with disabilities. His parents opted to live in a local Suva neighborhood, rather than on the campus at U.S.P. Larry attended Suva Primary School in Samabula and then Suva Grammar School in Nasese. Larry recalls experiences growing up in a foreign country, making friends with the neighborhood children, the diversity in his neighborhood, and difficulties adjusting to life back in the U.S. after more than two years abroad.
