Interview with Alan Robinson, February 21, 2022

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Alan Robinson’s life-long public service career began with Peace Corps and continues into his 80’s. He had a Masters in biological oceanography when in 1966 he accepted an invitation to Nigeria 27. Assigned to a remote fisheries research station at Malam Fatori on the shores of Lake Chad’s northern basin, he captained a research vessel while studying the lake’s little-known ecology, work described in a 2017 Friends of Nigeria newsletter. After COS in 1968 he began a Ph.D., program in Zambia, abandoned for treatment for schistosomiasis. Subsequently he had a long career with US National Park Service planning marine parks, interrupting it to serve as Natural Resources Program Manager, Peace Corps Paraguay 1987-89. Self-taught in Spanish, he developed assignments for 40-60 PCVs and assisted training -the hardest job he says he ever had. Alan describes 20 years of post-career volunteerism and advocacy in local, national, and international programs.
