Interview Summary

Rosa Johnson knew of Peace Corps from a cousin and from professors. She went to George Washington University for a B.A. in International Relations. She received her first choice of Peru in the Youth Development project. The medical clearance was a wait. Pre-Service Training was in Chaclacayo. Training prepared the trainees well for their service in language and cross-cultural themes. However, little needed classroom management skills were provided. She was first assigned to Jauja in a mountainous area working with six schools and in Sausa with one school. She discusses traditions in the area. Unfortunately, she was moved for security reasons. Her second assignment was in Choda with Ministry of Women’s Leadership Group. She talks about her counterparts in both sites. She talks about the sustainability of her work and the balance of work and life. COVID-19 evacuation came amid both denial from counterparts that the virus would affect Peru and the government closing agencies and restricting transportation.
