Interview Summary

Shamik Aikat was born in India but grew up in Zambia from the time he was about two years old because his parents were teachers there. He was educated through primary, secondary and first year of university in Zambia. He then did medical school in India, practiced in England, and came to Cleveland Clinic for residency and George Washington University in his specialty of cardiology-electrophysiology. He obtained a green card and opportunity to practice medicine in an underserved area of Kentucky (London) in 2004. He and his wife and three children live in Richmond. His practice is now located in Lexington. His wife who is Tibetan is a general practice physician working with veterans in Berea. They have fallen in love with Kentucky and its people. He sees his family as "ambassadors of ethnicity." He still identifies with Zambia because that is where he grew up.
