Interview with Susan Budig, August 18, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Susan Budig served in Thailand in 1986 for six months, after which she was medevaced home due to serious injuries from a traffic accident. She spent over a year recuperating. Susan’s assignment in Thailand was Youth in Development. Susan served as a 4-H agent, concentrating on teaching 14 to 24 year olds pragmatic skills that led to income generation and job creation. At her permanent site in Samut Sakhon, she lived with her boss and his family before renting her own apartment. She traveled to surrounding villages where she interacted with farmers always speaking in Thai. Lessons learned from her Peace Corps experience: rely on the kindness of strangers; realize it’s not all about you; connect with non-English speakers. Susan said Peace Corps gave her confidence, joy, and excitement. Including Peace Corps service on one’s resume is helpful, Susan said; "it opens doors."
