Interview with Katie McAndrew, July 28, 2020
Project: Peace Corps: COVID-19 Evacuated Peace Corps Volunteers Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Katie McAndrew served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Zambia from February 2018 through March 2020. Katie first heard about Peace Corps while in college at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she happened upon a recruitment event. She was inspired by a recruiter who said “it’s not just your job, but your life.” Katie was invited to serve in Zambia on her second application. Training was at an agricultural college in Chipembe. Trainee accommodations were home stays with local families. Her assignment was in Chipundu village, in Kawimbe, near Mbala. Her work involved sustainable agriculture and food security. She experienced some problems with her host family and accommodations upon arrival at her site, but was able to overcome difficulties and settle into her work at the village. She eventually developed close relationships in her community, working with farmers, women’s groups, and youth. She was evacuated under the global suspension of Peace Corps due to COVID-19.Interview Accession
