Interview Summary

Katharine Kimball began studying Spanish in middle school. She graduated from the University of Vermont in Spanish and political science, including a junior year in Spain. Katharine was very involved in local community voluntarism. Her application process passed up two assigned countries, accepting a posting in the Dominican Republic in the education sector. Katharine’s Pre-Service Training focused on group facilitation and creating didactic materials. Being fluent in Spanish, she used fieldtrips to seek funds from national beneficiaries for Volunteers’ potential projects. Katharine was assigned to Tireo al Medio, in a mountainous region that got quite cold despite being in the Caribbean. While assigned to the local school, she also worked with the PTA and local groups and individuals through more informal educational processes. One of her accomplishments was a well-received heath fair. She learned to listen and understand other people’s perspectives and interests.
