Interview Summary

Mr. Doran begins explaining how he met Wetherby, via the 1947 gubernatorial primary campaign of Harry Lee Waterfield. As a Kentucky House Representative, he gives an account of his relationship Wetherby when he was Lieutenant Governor, and how that relationship changed from 1947 to 1950. Doran gives his opinion of Wetherby as a leader, and of the 1951 extraordinary session the then Lt. Governor Wetherby called. He explains why he decided not to run for Governor in 1951. He speaks of the 1952-1954 when he was Director of Division of Teacher Education Certification in Kentucky State Department of Education, how he got retained that title, and the various collegiate president positions available during this time. Doran recalls 1948 how he helped Wetherby establish the Southern Regional Education Board, and how in 1954 Wetherby became Chair of this board. He speaks of Wetherby's response to the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, and his own feelings towards integration. Doran speaks of being the secretary of the Kentucky Council of Public Education 1952-1954, and Wetherby's role in the establishment of the Minimum Foundations Act and the Governor's interest in higher education, Catholic schools, and the implementation of the bookmobile. He ends answering the question does he regret not running for Governor.
