Interview Summary

Wade Hall interviews Lyman T. Johnson on a variety of topics including the meaning of human life, why people should be moral, black cultural centers in the South, experiences of segregation and resistance to it, classism in the black community, and black social and professional clubs. Johnson talks briefly on the purpose of humanity and morality before the tape is cut off and it skips ahead to him discussing life at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia, which he compares to Atlanta. He goes on to discuss segregation in various contexts, how his father taught him to refuse to submit to its degradation, and how he passed this same sentiment on to his students at Louisville's Central High School and to his daughter. He finishes the interview by talking about class and classism in the black community, and about black social clubs, fraternities, and sororities.
