Interview Summary

Lois Scott talks about taking adult education courses and passing the exam for her G.E.D. She talks about her work with the Harlan County Black Lung Association during and after the Brookside Mine Strike. She talks about a trip to Washington, D.C. to meet with the UMWA. She talks about a man working for the UMWA who did research on all of the senators and their aides. This man was later fired by Arnold Miller, and Scott discusses how this changed her opinion of Miller. She talks about how she was forced to resign her position as secretary-treasurer of the Harlan County Black Lung Association after challenging the president on budget matters. Scott talks about a union miner, Tommy Ferguson, and his wife's home being shot up by the opposition. She talks about the Brookside Women's Club setting up a guard around the house.
