Interview Summary

Zachary Westerman joined the United States Navy on September 15, 2003. Westerman discusses his reasoning for joining the Navy and not going to college when he graduated from High School. He talks about completing basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois and receiving specialized training at Pensacola, Florida. In this interview Westerman talks about his job as an avionics electronics technician in the Navy, where he did maintenance on S-3B Viking jet planes that were used to track submarines. Talks about being sent to San Diego where he boarded a boat for a 7 and a half month deployment. Talks about close encounters with enemy aircraft and cruisers and how theses situations were handled. Talks about his transition back to the states and his challenges with accessing the educational benefits he was allowed.
