Interview Summary

Lorraine Cooper recounts her early relationship with John Sherman Cooper, their marriage and subsequent move to India for John Sherman Cooper's ambassadorship. Cooper believes that her husband was such a successful ambassador because of his ability to understand and relate to people. Mrs. Cooper, being from California, found it easy to fit into Kentucky because she was not identified with any particular region of the state. The interviewee talks of John Sherman Cooper's 1956 Senatorial campaign. Cooper discusses John Sherman Cooper's relationships with Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon, various other Senators, major Senatorial accomplishments, and John Sherman Cooper's ambassadorship to East Germany. Cooper discusses the couple's return to the U.S. after East Germany and John Sherman Cooper's personal flaws. To conclude the interview, Cooper discusses how she will preserve her papers.
