Interview with Linda "Lyn" Gray, July 30, 2022

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Linda "Lyn" Gray served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia from 1972 to 1976. She and her husband applied as a couple. They were sent benefits for families which included storing their goods. Since they didn’t have children yet they didn’t qualify and scrambled for storage options shortly before leaving. Linda was a high school teacher in the county seat. She taught English and French in classes that increased in size every year due to better access to education. Only a few of the students were female. The teachers in the school were mostly other Peace Corps Volunteers so she did not have Liberian colleagues. Linda said that it was hard to say “no” in the local language because it was not part of the culture. She visits Liberian often and this remains a part of life. A few years after serving, Linda became an APCD in Zaire. After that she became the Country Director in Niger.

You may come across language in UK Libraries Special Collections Research Center collections and online resources that you find harmful or offensive. SCRC collects materials from different cultures and time periods to preserve and make available the historical record. These materials document the time period when they were created and the view of their creator. As a result, some may demonstrate racist and offensive views that do not reflect the values of UK Libraries.

If you find description with problematic language that you think SCRC should review, please contact us at SCRC@uky.edu.
