Interview Summary

John Metzger discusses serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in an education program in Kenya from 1985-87. He discusses his anti-war motivation to join the Peace Corps, his trainings and teaching in a remote community-based Ng’et Moi Harambe boarding school overlooking the Rift Valley. He describes securing funds from Catholic Relief Services for a four-stall women’s shower and from the Peace Corps Partnership Program for installation of solar power at the school, which had not had electricity before. He also talks about coaching the award-winning cross-country running team and introducing basketball to the community. Metzer also discusses living and working in Lesotho and Senegal after Peace Corps.
