Interview with Philip Taranoff, September 9, 2020

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Philip Taranoff grew up in a small town in Oregon. He did not stay in college, rather bounced around in construction and other jobs. He had seen Peace Corps PSAs on T.V. which influenced him to think about community service. A friend from his town supported his need to get out town and see the world. He was assigned to a 4-H type project in the Dominican Republic. His Pre-Service Training was not very instructive as the program was new in response to a request from the Minister of Agriculture and still experimenting with its implementation. Philip felt that trainees had a “poor attitude” toward Dominicans, but by the end of service they completely changed their attitude. They learned that there are other ways of life, just not the ones they came from! Philip was started a monthly newsletter for the program that was distributed nationally to all 5-D clubs. Dominican Republic, March 1976 to November 1977, Agriculture/4-H
