Interview Summary

Brigitta Smith, nee Korner, was born in 1922 in Austria and immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island with her parents in the mid-1920s. Brigitta narrates her life over much of the twentieth century in central Cincinnati with her family as they struggled during the Great Depression, moved frequently, and in time settled in the Mohawk area. She recounts the challenges of getting charity relief during the depression when the Catholic relief services excluded her family because she attended a public school instead of a Catholic school. She touches on her schooling, her jobs, her growing independence, her marriage to Louis Smith who was serving in World War II, and starting her own family.
