Interview Summary

The son of a farmer, Hale attended Rosemont School in Clark County, Douglas High School in Lexington, and graduated from Oliver High School in Winchester, Kentucky. He began his business in 1975 after obtaining experience working for his uncle, and recalls vividly the problems he and other African Americans faced in obtaining financial assistance. He bemoans the lack of African American businesses in Lexington, ironically noting that 95% of his customers are white.
