Interview Summary

Governor Wetherby discusses his time as Lieutenant Governor and his role to reside over Kentucky General Assembly. Topics addressed include Strip Mining in Western Kentucky and Research Commission, the development of the department of Social Security in Kentucky (Kentucky Department of Human Resources), the Kentucky Agriculture and Industrial Board (now the Chamber of Commerce), and the Kentucky Building Commission. Wetherby recalls the Miners strike during his term in this office, and the 1949-50 Kentucky General Assembly Session. Speaks of the correlation between his term as Lieutenant Governor and Governor of Kentucky, the split of the National Democratic Party and the emergence of the Dixiecrats in 1948, his successful election for Kentucky Governor, and the decision of Governor Earle Clements to become a senator.
