Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Stevin Strickland served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Uzbekistan, from 2002 through 2004, in the Education Program. Stevin wanted to join Peace Corps after High School, but lacked qualifications. After college, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. His Air Force experience included developing Human Rights courses at the Inter-American Air Forces Academy. Stevin applied to Peace Corps before leaving the Air Force, and was invited to serve with training cohort UZ-13. Training in Chimgan, Uzbekistan, included Uzbek and Russian language, culture, and a host family living experience. Stevin was assigned to Lyceum for the University of World Economy and Diplomacy in Tashkent, where he taught English, Arts and Culture, and U.S. Studies. Secondary projects included mentoring teachers, and working with the Uzbekistan Teachers of English Association to teach Instruction Systems Design. That led to hosting a children’s television program. Stevin discusses his Military and Peace Corps Service; living and working in Uzbekistan; challenges faced as a volunteer; and Peace Corps impact on his life.Interview Accession
