Interview with Richard M. "Rich" Kirby, August 16, 2015
Project: Exploring the Legacies of Appalshop Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Rich Kirby discusses his childhood, split between Cynthiana, Kentucky and New York City. In Kentucky, he stayed with his grandmother Addie Graham, whose roots in Eastern Kentucky and musical talents attracted Kirby southward. He attended law school, became involved in 1960s politics, moved to Appalachia, and drifted toward work as a musician by 1970. Kirby's musical work led him to Appalshop, where he collaborated with musicians on June Appal Records.Interview Accession
