Interview Summary

Naomi Cohen was a member of the Appalachian Volunteers group as part of the Volunteers in Service to America during the War on Poverty in the 1960s. In this interview she discusses how she became involved with the Appalachian Volunteers, the work she did while in the Appalachian region, and why she decided to stay in West Virginia. She talks about her beliefs in the work she was doing as a volunteer and the criticism the group faced from various factions within the community. She discusses her criticisms of the group and the discrimination faced by the women of the group. She talks about finishing law school and her role in the formation of the Appalachian Research and Defense Fund (AppalReD). She talks about a documentary made in the community concerning strip mining.
