Interview Summary
Professor Roland interviews former Kentucky governor and baseball commissioner Albert B. "Happy" Chandler about his political career. Chandler discusses the implementation of two primary elections in the 1935 gubernatorial election, of which he won all three races. He tells Roland about how the two primaries were implemented, their results, and the opposition by a large part of the government to implementing any kind of primary election. He talks about his relationship with J. Dan Talbott, a fellow Kentucky politician, at length. Chandler also discusses his decision to leave the U.S. Senate in order to become baseball commissioner and his close relationships within the Senate, including with Virginia senator Harry F.
