Interview Summary

Paul A. Rodell served as a Peace Corps volunteer in an agriculture program in the Philippines from 1968-71. He discusses his various motivations to join the Peace Corps and training originally for science education in Hawaii and in the Philippines for agriculture. He worked with the Aeta a national minority near Mt. Pinatubo improving rice farming techniques. He also assisted in vegetable gardening and rabbit raising. Years after his service the volcanic mountain erupted displacing the community. He discusses being threatened by and interactions with members of the communist New People’s Army. In his third year, as a Program Assistant for Agriculture in the Manila Peace Corps office, he travelled around the country supporting agriculture volunteers. This is the first of a two-part interview.
