Interview with Kevin Griffith, February 24, 2023
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Kevin Griffith served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Uzbekistan from 2002 to 2004, in the Education Program. Kevin developed a sense of service while attending St Edwards University in Texas. His decision to join Peace Corps was influenced by an uncle who served in Tanzania. Kevin was initially selected to serve in Russia, but the program there closed during his recruitment, and he opted for Uzbekistan. Training was conducted in Kibray, near Tashkent, and in Baytqurgan village. Kevin’s assignment was in Parkent, teaching English to grades 7 through 10 at Specialized School Parkent #5. A secondary project, funded by a SPA grant, provided piped water to village homes. He also obtained computers for the school. Kevin developed close friendships with his local counterpart, host family, and fellow PCVs. After Peace Corps, Kevin attended graduate school and Carnegie Mellon. He traveled to India in response to the 2004 tsunami, and helped raise funds for relief projects. He later studied law at Case Western, interned for the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia at the Hague, and ICT for Rwanda in Tanzania. Kevin worked for USAID in Afghanistan, and now practices law in Florida.Interview Accession
