Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Dominican Republic, 1966-1969, Community Development Randolph (Randy) Adams joined Peace Corps with six credits shy of graduating from Case Institute of Technology in Physics. He discusses his outward-bound style of Peace Corps training in Puerto Rico. Randy was assigned to work on community development projects in the community of El Guanal as his home base and then in another nine surrounding communities. He assisted communities build schools, health clinics, farm-to-market roads, youth clubs, etc. In his third year in the capital, Santo Domingo, he advised a newly formed Education Unit in the Institute for Agrarian Reform promoting similar projects in new agricultural settlements. Randy includes poignant observations about the revolution and multi-generational impacts after a 30-year dictatorship on the transition-to-democracy working with political officials and communities. After Volunteer service, Randy earned a Ph.D. in sociology and worked in domestic and international development programs retiring from the Peace Corps as Director of Evaluation in 2011.Interview Accession
