Interview Summary

Former Kentucky Governor and U.S. Senator Albert B. "Happy" Chandler discusses his first gubernatorial administration and time as U.S. Senator with Professor Charles P. Roland from the University of Kentucky. He talks about various aspects of his first administration, including implementing the Reorganization Act of 1936 and the logistics of reorganizing the Kentucky government. Chandler recalls his relationship with Coach Adolph Rupp and assisting him in securing a contract with the University of Kentucky to coach basketball. Chandler talks about his senatorial race against Alben Barkley and how he eventually joined the Senate in 1938 after the death of Senator Logan. He then recalls various activities of his during his time as Senator, which coincided with World War II. He is critical of President Roosevelt's New Deal, as well as his dealings during World War II. Chandler talks about the bombing of Japan and their subsequent surrender, speaking to the fact that he attempted to rally Congress to provide more support to the Pacific Theater than the European Theater prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Chandler then discusses his travels to visit various world leaders during World War II and the details of those travels.
