Interview Summary

Armando Prats, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of English at the University of Kentucky. In his more than 40 years at UK, Dr. Prats has published two books, numerous articles, served as academic authority on television programs, won teaching and service awards, and served in many administrative and advisory roles. In the interview, Dr. Prats discusses his childhood in Havana, Cuba and the violence leading up to Fidel Castro?s overthrow of the Batista government. He tells of coming to the United States as part of Operation Peter Pan and the difficulties faced by him and other children who were separated from their families. Dr. Prats relates how the mentorship of professors in college helped foster his love of literature and film and urge him toward a career in research, writing, and teaching. He discusses changes he has seen in the profession, changes at UK, and how students have changed over the years.
