Interview Summary

Harriet Rose discusses her family and her ancestry. She grew up living in Lexington, and discusses her Jewish traditions and identity growing up. She went to Sunday school every Sunday growing up and was eventually confirmed at her temple, Adath Israel. High school was the first time that Rose realized that she was different because of her religion when she wasn't invited to certain clubs because she was Jewish. She discusses her college life at both Brenau College and the University of Kentucky, including her participation on the debate team, dating, and her experiences with discrimination in sororities. Rose discusses her and her husband's role in race relations in Lexington. Stan Rosenberg brought the Urban League to Lexington and won the brotherhood award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews. Rose and her husband hosted Lexington's first integrated dinner party.

Rose says that her Jewish identity was not impacted by her time at UK, but at the Temple. Rose and her husband were very active in their Temple, Adath Israel. Rose taught Sunday school at the Temple from the time she was 15 years old. Rose discusses the differences between the Temple and the Synagogue, the two Jewish congregations of Lexington.
