Interview Summary

Max Lanier, from North Carolina, was a left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. He was the winning pitcher of the last game of the 1944 World Series. He also played in the Mexican League, for which he was suspended from Major League baseball for five years. Lanier and two other players filed suit in Federal court against the Major League's reserve clause. The suspension was lifted and the suit was dropped. In this interview, he discusses his baseball career before and after World War II, his short military service during the war, his fellow St. Louis Cardinals players, playing in the Mexican League, his reasons for leaving the Mexican League, his lawsuit against Major League baseball, some of the changes in baseball since the late 1930s, and the end of his career in baseball in the early 1950s.
