Interview Summary

Reverend Nutter, pastor of First Baptist Church in Lexington, talks about church membership, African American pastors and their churches during the Depression era, and his memories of Reverend Albert B. Lee. Reverend Nutter moved to Lexington in 1926 after serving his country during World War I as a company clerk and found work as an undertaker. He recounts his experiences with city officials, the school board and Superintendent Ridgeway. He discusses his role in the civil rights movement, the controversy over the principal at Carver Elementary School, and the origins of the Urban League.
