Interview Summary
Ronald Gilbert discusses his reason for joining the Army in 1965. William Rice talks about his feelings about being drafted in 1968. They discuss their families' reaction to their military service. They describe their basic training and first impressions of Vietnam. Rice talks about his assignment to a supply outfit in Qui Nhon, and Gilbert talks about his assignment to the 34th Armored Battalion of the First Infantry Division. Gilbert gives his impressions of combat and the Vietcong. Rice talks about his contact with the South Vietnamese, and about destroying a village that harbored Vietcong.Gilbert discusses his faith in his commanders' abilities, drug use by American troops in Vietnam, and effectiveness of American tanks. Gilbert talks about being wounded twice and losing an eye. They discuss lasting impressions of Vietnam and their reception upon returning home.
