Interview Summary

Dan Wagner served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco in a Rural Public Works program from 1968-70. He talks about the unusual way in which he, as an engineering student, was recruited to join the Peace Corps and assigned first to Ethiopia and then Morocco. He discusses the strengths and weaknesses of his training in the U.S. and Morocco; and his experiences building canals for rural agricultural development in the Atlas Mountains and interning in Dar America (a cultural center of the U.S. Consulate) in Casablanca. He also talks about his close and long-lasting connections to Morocco, including his research in Morocco as part of his PhD program and his many professional return trips to Morocco. He discusses the profound influence Peace Corps service had on his career furthering Peace Corps ideals, and also through teaching and conducting research in the field of international education.
