Interview Summary

Cox recalls the first time he met Clements in 1939. Cox describes Clements' time in the General Assembly, his quick rise to Floor Leader. Cox describes Waterfield and Clements' relationship while in the State Senate. He also talks about the role of then-Governor Simeon Willis in the legislature. Cox describes the conflict between the Tennessee Valley Authority and Kentucky Utilities, and how it was dealt with in the legislature. He discusses the 1943 gubernatorial primaries, as well as Clements' decision to run for U.S. Congress in 1944, and his major opposition and supporters, including an exchange about Scoop Sherwood. Cox discusses Clements' 1947 gubernatorial campaign against Harry Lee Waterfield, who he calls a "Farm Bureau candidate."
