Interview Summary

Interview with Melanie Headley - Richmond, VA

Melanie begins her story by sharing how the births of her four children influenced her to become a childbirth educator, lactation counselor and doula. She talks about becoming pregnant for the first time at age 22 and wanting to have a natural childbirth. After a series of disappointing encounters with her obstetrics practice she found a birthing center in Alexandria, VA where she gave birth to her first child. She talks about finding meconium in her broken waters, purple pushing and the baby?s heart rate staying low after contractions that precipitated a transfer to the hospital.

She shares insights from each of her consecutive home births. Melanie talks about the importance of trust in birth. She talks about laboring in the water and how having babies at home. She says that her home births felt like having birthday parties.

She talks about the importance of story telling in birth and how it can help pregnant women and their partners. She describes the feeling of coming into the ?tribe of mama-hood? and needing to trust your body in birth as a way of starting parenting on strong foundation. Melanie also talks about having her children attend her during birth and catching her last baby.
