Interview Summary

Senator Hatfield begins the interview by recalling how he first met John Sherman Cooper. Additionally, Hatfield talks of his and Cooper's role in the 1964 Republican National Convention. Hatfield evaluates why Cooper tended to vote independently of the Republicans. Hatfield also details Cooper's political ideology. The interviewee provides his views on New Deal politicians. Cooper's role in civil rights legislation is considered. Cooper's perspective on Cold War policy is discussed. Hatfield provides an overview of Cold War politics during the 1960s. Cooper's faults are also mentioned. Hatfield concludes the interview with an assessment of why Cooper did not vote for the Hatfield-McGovern amendment.
