Interview Summary
Shannon Fauver is an attorney in Louisville, Kentucky, who represented same-sex couples in Bourke v. Beshear (2014) and Love v. Beshear (2014), marriage equality cases that were part of a package of cases that the Supreme Court of the United States considered in 2015 as Obergefell v. Hodges. In Obergefell, the Court held that it was unconstitutional for state laws to ban recognition of same-sex marriages.In this interview, Fauver discusses how the federal lawsuit evolved, from the decision to file in the Western District Court of Kentucky to petitioning the Supreme Court of the United States. She also describes her childhood in Louisville, growing up in a family of lawyers, attending the Brandeis School of Law as a night student, starting a solo practice, and life as a practicing attorney, primarily in bankruptcy and Social Security law. Fauver is founding partner at the Fauver Law Office in Louisville.
